16% Drop in Tayside Crime Since Last Year Hailed By MSPs

Dundee’s constituency MSPs today [26th June] welcomed new statistics which show that recorded crimes in Tayside decreased by 16% over the previous year with a 35% drop since 2006/7.

The new justice statistics published by the Scottish Government today show that crime continues to fall year on year with crime now at its lowest level since 1975.

There were 3,496 fewer crimes in Tayside than in 2010-11, a further drop of 4% and there are drops in all categories of crime with sexual crimes down by 5%, crimes of dishonesty down by 32% on last year and fire-raising and vandalism down by 44%.

Dundee City East MSP Shona Robison said: “These figures show that the SNP Government’s commitment to tackling crime is reaping rewards with a 35 year low in recorded crime.

“In Tayside there has been a huge 20 per cent decrease in drug offences since last year, something I’m particularly pleased about and crimes of handling an offensive weapon are down by 14%.

“Our thanks must go to the officers and staff of Tayside Police whos good work is paying off for the public.

“With knife crime also falling by a massive 44% since the SNP came to power, it is clear that the efforts of the SNP, the police and communities is having an effect. “

“Since 2007, the SNP has made tackling crime a key priority by investing in the prevention of crime. As a result of that investment we are seeing safer communities with more frontline police on our streets, a fantastic achievement.

Dundee City West MSP Joe FitzPatrick commented: “”This drop in crime is great news for everyone in Tayside and other communities across the country and further evidence that the SNP is moving Scotland forward.

“Crime is at a 37 year low, fear of crime is down, the risk of being a victim of crime in Scotland is falling and is lower than in England and Wales.”
